Apple has just been granted a controversial patent that would allow the Government and companies to shut down services on our phone in a certain area. The patent dubbed “Apparatus and methods for enforcement of policies upon a wireless device” makes this geographical restriction of a phone possible entirely wirelessly.

“Covert police or government operations may require complete “blackout” conditions,” is one comment to the patent application.

And while it’s clear that the patent could actually help the military in foreign operations, doubts remain that this could be used by companies and police to shut down users for whatever they decide. Imagine going to a concert and having camera blocked on all iPhones in the area – no pictures, no video recordings. That seems like ignoring the first amendment, and we expect to see it challenged by rights advocates.
